Founded in 1905, Granby
has seen much
growth over recent years. Grand County, one
of Colorado's larger mountain counties, was once home of the
Ute Indians.

Settlers used the only
route from Breckenridge into the area and soon took up
ranching and farming.
In the late
1800s Army Captain Edward Berthoud located and established a route
over the Continental Divide, now known as Berthoud Pass. It became a
stagecoach road from Golden into the valley, opening for summer
visitors to go to Hot Sulphur Springs and Grand Lake for vacations.
During winter the valley was completely isolated.
In the early 1900s the
Corona Pass railroad opened and Grand County finally had year-round
accessibility.
By the 1920s
Moffat Tunnel opened and gave the railroad easier access. By 1930 it
was decided to maintain Berthoud Pass during the winter months, thus
changing the nature of the area forever.
